Physical Exam Q&A
Why do I need a physical exam?
Even if you’re generally healthy with no personal or family history of chronic disease, you still need routine physical exams. A physical is important to:
- Evaluate your heart health
- Examine your physical health
- Check your hearing and vision
- Check labs for signs of chronic conditions
- Get screened for STDs
- Talk about family planning or birth control options
In some cases, a physical exam is a required part of your employment or pre-employment. If you need to maintain your commercial driver’s license, for instance, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires you to undergo a physical with a certified practitioner. The team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center can help.
What happens during a physical exam?
Your physical exam begins with a conversation between you and your dedicated physician. They need to know all about your personal and family health history, as well as any current concerns you have. Depending on your health, your practitioner may conduct any of the following tests or screenings:
- Heart rhythm
- Blood pressure
- Nervous system
- Blood draw or urinalysis
- Lungs and abdomen exam
- Body mass index (BMI) calculation
Since the dedicated team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center performs DOT physical exams, as well as work, school, and sports physicals, you should bring any required paperwork with you. Your physician may have to perform additional evaluations or tests and then fill out your paperwork.
How often do I need a physical exam?
In most cases, if you’re generally healthy, the team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center recommends coming in once a year for annual physicals. If you have a chronic condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, you may need to come in more frequently, such as twice a year.
DOT physicals are valid for 24 months. If you need a physical exam for work, school, or sports, you could be required to undergo annual physical exams.
